I couldn't imagine handling the amount of spam you're receiving. Do you have Akismet installed and activated? Although I have no idea how using rel="nofollow" will help to prevent spam (there is a debate going on about the dofollow VS nofollow camps), perhaps it's worth giving it a try :) good luck!
